Class 9 Ganita Manjari Chapter 8: Sequences and Progressions
Part 9
AP BASICS IN ACTION Exercise 8.2 - Term Calculations \(t_n = a + (n-1)d\) The key to unlocking any Arithmetic Progression. Find the missing puzzle piece! Given three values, you can always solve for the fourth.
[span_0](start_span)[span_0](end_span)[span_1](start_span)[span_1](end_span) Now that we have established the core formulas for Arithmetic Progressions, it is time to put our algebraic skills to the test with Exercise 8.2! [span_2](start_span)[span_2](end_span)

In these problems, we will calculate specific terms far down the line, determine the exact position of given numbers, and seamlessly switch between explicit and recursive mathematical rules. Let's solve!
1 Finding Specific Terms
Ganita Manjari - Pg 185
Exercise 8.2 - Q1: Find the 10th and 26th terms of the AP: \(3, 8, 13, 18, \dots\) [span_3](start_span)[span_3](end_span)
Concept:
1
Identify the first term (\(a\)) and the common difference (\(d = t_2 - t_1\)). [span_4](start_span)[span_4](end_span)
2
Use the explicit formula \(t_n = a + (n-1)d\) to find any term directly.
www.maheshkumarsir.in
Hint:
1
Here, \(a = 3\). Calculate \(d = 8 - 3 = 5\).
2
For the 10th term, \(n = 10\). Calculate \(3 + (10-1)5\). [span_5](start_span)[span_5](end_span)
www.maheshkumarsir.in
Mistakes to Avoid:
!
Using \(nd\) instead of \((n-1)d\): If you calculate \(t_{10} = 3 + 10(5) = 53\), you have accidentally found the 11th term! Always subtract 1 from \(n\).
www.maheshkumarsir.in
Solution:
Given AP: \(3, 8, 13, 18, \dots\)
First term (\(a\)) = 3
Common difference (\(d\)) = \(8 - 3 = 5\)

1. Finding the 10th term (\(n=10\)):
\(t_{10} = a + 9d\)
\(t_{10} = 3 + 9(5)\)
\(t_{10} = 3 + 45 =\) 48

2. Finding the 26th term (\(n=26\)): [span_6](start_span)[span_6](end_span)
\(t_{26} = a + 25d\)
\(t_{26} = 3 + 25(5)\)
\(t_{26} = 3 + 125 =\) 128
www.maheshkumarsir.in
2 Finding Positions & Validating Terms
Ganita Manjari - Pg 185
Exercise 8.2 - Q2: Which term of the AP: \(21, 18, 15, \dots\) is \(-81\)? Also, is \(0\) a term of this AP? Give reasons for your answer. [span_7](start_span)[span_7](end_span)
Concept:
1
To find which position a number occupies, set \(t_n\) equal to that number and solve algebraically for \(n\). [span_8](start_span)[span_8](end_span)
2
If solving for \(n\) yields a positive, whole integer, the number is a valid term. If it yields a decimal, the number is not in the sequence.
www.maheshkumarsir.in
Hint:
1
Here, \(a = 21\) and \(d = 18 - 21 = -3\).
2
Set \(21 + (n-1)(-3) = -81\).
3
Expand to \(24 - 3n = -81\) and solve. Repeat this process setting the equation equal to 0. [span_9](start_span)[span_9](end_span)
www.maheshkumarsir.in
Mistakes to Avoid:
!
Dropping negative signs: Because the sequence is decreasing, \(d = -3\). If you mistakenly use \(d = 3\), your entire equation will collapse into an impossible answer!
www.maheshkumarsir.in
Solution:
Given AP: \(21, 18, 15, \dots\)
\(a = 21\) and \(d = 18 - 21 = -3\)

1. Which term is \(-81\)?
Let \(t_n = -81\)
\(a + (n-1)d = -81\)
\(21 + (n-1)(-3) = -81\)
\(21 - 3n + 3 = -81\)
\(24 - 3n = -81\)
\(-3n = -81 - 24\)
\(-3n = -105 \implies n = 35\)
Ans: -81 is the 35th term.

2. Is 0 a term? [span_10](start_span)[span_10](end_span)
Let \(t_n = 0\)
\(24 - 3n = 0\)
\(3n = 24 \implies n = 8\)
Because 8 is a natural integer, Ans: Yes, 0 is the 8th term.
www.maheshkumarsir.in
3 Translating Explicit to Recursive Rules
Ganita Manjari - Pg 185
Exercise 8.2 - Q3: Find the \(n^{th}\) term of the AP: \(11, 8, 5, 2 \dots\)
Write the recursive rule for this AP. [span_11](start_span)[span_11](end_span)
Concept:
1
The \(n^{th}\) term is the explicit formula: \(t_n = a + (n-1)d\). Expand and simplify.
2
The recursive formula must define the starting point (\(t_1\)) and state the jump to the next term (\(t_n = t_{n-1} + d\)). [span_12](start_span)[span_12](end_span)
www.maheshkumarsir.in
Hint:
1
\(a = 11\). What is \(d\)? (\(8 - 11 = ?\))
2
Explicit: \(11 + (n-1)(-3)\).
3
Recursive: \(t_1 = 11, \; t_n = t_{n-1} - 3\). [span_13](start_span)[span_13](end_span)
www.maheshkumarsir.in
Mistakes to Avoid:
!
Leaving the explicit formula unsimplified: Do not just leave the answer as \(t_n = 11 + (n-1)(-3)\). You must distribute the \(-3\) and combine the constant terms!
www.maheshkumarsir.in
Solution:
Given AP: \(11, 8, 5, 2 \dots\)
\(a = 11\) and \(d = 8 - 11 = -3\)

1. Finding the explicit \(n^{th}\) term:
\(t_n = a + (n-1)d\)
\(t_n = 11 + (n-1)(-3)\)
\(t_n = 11 - 3n + 3\)
Ans: \(t_n = 14 - 3n\) [span_14](start_span)[span_14](end_span)

2. Writing the Recursive Rule:
Ans: \(t_1 = 11, \; t_n = t_{n-1} - 3\) for \(n \ge 2\)
www.maheshkumarsir.in
Select the correct option:
If an AP has a first term \(a=3\) and a common difference \(d=5\), what is its 10th term (\(t_{10}\))? [span_15](start_span)[span_15](end_span)
Concept:
1
Use the explicit formula \(t_n = a + (n-1)d\) to instantly calculate any term. [span_16](start_span)[span_16](end_span)
www.maheshkumarsir.in
Hint:
1
Set \(n=10\). The formula becomes \(3 + (9)5\).
www.maheshkumarsir.in
Mistakes to Avoid:
!
Forgetting the \(-1\): If you calculate \(3 + 10(5) = 53\), you have found the 11th term, not the 10th!
www.maheshkumarsir.in
Solution:
\(t_{10} = a + 9d\)
\(t_{10} = 3 + 9(5) = 3 + 45 = 48\). [span_17](start_span)[span_17](end_span)
www.maheshkumarsir.in
Select the correct option:
In the AP: \(21, 18, 15 \dots\), what is the value of the common difference \(d\)? [span_18](start_span)[span_18](end_span)
Concept:
1
Calculate \(d\) by subtracting the first term from the second term: \(d = t_2 - t_1\). [span_19](start_span)[span_19](end_span)
www.maheshkumarsir.in
Hint:
1
What is \(18 - 21\)?
www.maheshkumarsir.in
Mistakes to Avoid:
!
Dropping the negative sign: Just looking at the gap "3" and writing \(d=3\) will completely break your calculations. The sequence is decreasing!
www.maheshkumarsir.in
Solution:
\(d = t_2 - t_1 = 18 - 21 = -3\). [span_20](start_span)[span_20](end_span)
www.maheshkumarsir.in
Select the correct option:
To logically prove if a number (like 0) is a valid term in an AP, you must solve the equation \(t_n = 0\). What must be true about the solved value of \(n\)? [span_21](start_span)[span_21](end_span)
Concept:
1
The variable \(n\) strictly dictates the index or position of the sequence. Positions can only be counting numbers. [span_22](start_span)[span_22](end_span)
www.maheshkumarsir.in
Hint:
1
Can someone stand in the 4.5th place in a line?
www.maheshkumarsir.in
Mistakes to Avoid:
!
Confusing the term value with position: The term itself can be zero, negative, or a fraction. But its position (\(n\)) must be a positive integer.
www.maheshkumarsir.in
Solution:
As seen when checking if 0 is a term, solving the equation yields \(n = 8\). Because 8 is a natural integer, 0 is definitively the 8th term. [span_23](start_span)[span_23](end_span)
www.maheshkumarsir.in
Select the correct option:
What is the correct recursive rule for the AP: \(11, 8, 5, 2 \dots\)? [span_24](start_span)[span_24](end_span)
Concept:
1
A recursive rule requires two absolute components: the base case (\(t_1\)) and the relationship between consecutive terms. [span_25](start_span)[span_25](end_span)
www.maheshkumarsir.in
Hint:
1
Look for the option that clearly states the first term is 11, AND shows the subtraction of 3 from the previous term.
www.maheshkumarsir.in
Mistakes to Avoid:
!
Choosing incomplete rules: Option B tells you to subtract 3, but without telling you where to start, it is mathematically useless!
www.maheshkumarsir.in
Solution:
The first term \(a = 11\). The difference is \(-3\).
Therefore, the full recursive rule is \(t_1 = 11\) and \(t_n = t_{n-1} - 3\). [span_26](start_span)[span_26](end_span)
www.maheshkumarsir.in
Select the correct option:
If you are told that the 8th term of an Arithmetic Progression is exactly 0, which algebraic equation must be true?
Concept:
1
Using \(t_n = a + (n-1)d\), any specific term gives us a linear equation tying \(a\) and \(d\) together. [span_27](start_span)[span_27](end_span)
www.maheshkumarsir.in
Hint:
1
Substitute \(n=8\) into \(a + (n-1)d\).
2
Set the result equal to 0.
www.maheshkumarsir.in
Mistakes to Avoid:
!
Using \(nd\): Assuming the 8th term is \(a + 8d\) is a fatal error that will ruin simultaneous equation problems! Always use \((n-1)\).
www.maheshkumarsir.in
Solution:
\(t_n = a + (n-1)d\)
\(t_8 = a + (8-1)d\)
\(a + 7d = 0\)
