Figure it Out (Q7) Linear vs Exponential Growth πŸ“‘ PAGE 24 (Click for theory) πŸ’‘
πŸ“– Textbook Theory: Types of Growth

Linear Growth: This happens when you add the exact same amount every year (Simple Interest). If you graph it, it looks like a perfectly straight line.[cite: 27]

Exponential Growth: This happens when the amount you add increases every year (Compound Interest). If you graph it, the line curves sharply upward into the sky. Compounding is the ultimate example of exponential growth.[cite: 27]

7. Consider an amount ₹1000. If this grows at 10% p.a., how long will it take to double when compounding is done vs. when compounding is not done? Is compounding an example of exponential growth and not-compounding an example of linear growth?[cite: 27]
The Race to ₹2000 (Double) 1k 2k Time (Years) → DOUBLE! 10 Years Simple (Linear) ~7.3 Years Compound (Exponential)
1
"Doubling" an amount of ₹1000 means the final amount must be ₹2000.
2
For Simple Interest, find how much interest is earned in 1 year, and divide the required ₹1000 growth by that number.[cite: 27]
3
For Compound Interest, you must find when $(1.10)^t = 2$. You can do this by testing values for $t$.[cite: 27]
1
Without Compounding: 10% of 1000 is 100. If you earn 100 every year, how many years does it take to earn 1000?
2
With Compounding: The multiplier is 1.10. Test it out: $1.1 \times 1.1 = 1.21$ (2 yrs). Try $(1.10)^7$ and $(1.10)^8$.
!
Assuming they double at the same time: Simple interest takes a full 10 years because it stubbornly refuses to earn interest on past interest. Compound interest hits the finish line almost 3 years faster because of exponential growth.
Part 1: Without Compounding (Simple Interest)
Target Amount = ₹2000. This means we need ₹1000 in pure interest.
Interest per year = $10\% \text{ of } 1000 = 100$.
Years needed = $\frac{1000}{100} = 10$ years.
Part 2: With Compounding
We need the multiplier $(1.10)^t$ to equal 2.
Let's test values:
$(1.10)^7 \approx 1.948$ (Almost double!)
$(1.10)^8 \approx 2.143$ (More than double!)
It will double between 7 and 8 years (approx 7.3 years).

Ans: Simple takes 10 years. Compound takes ~7.3 years. Yes, Simple is linear and Compound is exponential.[cite: 27]

Figure it Out (Q8) Real World Compounding πŸ“‘ PAGE 24 (Click for theory) πŸ’‘
πŸ“– Textbook Theory: Biological Compounding

Compound interest isn't just for money. Anything that grows based on its current size (like populations, bacteria, or internet virality) uses the Compound Growth Formula.[cite: 27]

Why not Simple Interest? If a city adds 10,000 people in Year 1, the new population is larger. In Year 2, the growth rate applies to everyone, including those 10,000 new people. The base expands naturally, exactly like compound interest!

8. The population of a city is rising by about 3% every year. If the current population is 1.5 crore, what is the expected population after 3 years?[cite: 27]
Visualizing Compounding Population 1.50 Start 1.545 Yr 1 1.591 Yr 2 1.639 Cr Yr 3
1
Because population naturally compounds, we use the formula $A = P\left(1 + \frac{R}{100}\right)^n$.[cite: 27]
2
$P$ is the starting population (1.5). $R$ is the growth rate (3). $n$ is the number of years (3).
1
The multiplier inside the bracket is $\left(1 + \frac{3}{100}\right) = 1.03$.
2
Calculate $1.5 \times (1.03)^3$. Multiply $1.03 \times 1.03 \times 1.03$ first, then multiply by 1.5.
!
The Simple Addition Trap: You cannot say "3% per year for 3 years is 9%. 9% of 1.5 crore is 0.135. Total is 1.635." By doing that, you are ignoring the fact that the babies born in Year 1 will also contribute to the population growth rate in Year 3! The true answer is slightly higher.
Formula Calculation
Given: $P = 1.5$ crore, $R = 3\%$ p.a., Time ($n$) = 3 years.[cite: 27]
Formula: $A = P \left( 1 + \frac{R}{100} \right)^n$
$A = 1.5 \left( 1 + \frac{3}{100} \right)^3$
$A = 1.5 \times (1.03)^3$
$A = 1.5 \times (1.03 \times 1.03 \times 1.03)$
$A = 1.5 \times 1.092727$
$A = 1.6390905$ crore

Ans: The expected population is roughly 1.639 crore (1,63,90,905).[cite: 27]
Practice Question 36.1
In a laboratory, the number of bacteria in a certain experiment increases at the rate of 2.5% per hour. Find the number of bacteria at the end of 2 hours if the initial count is 5,06,000.[cite: 27]
1
The Compound Growth formula $A = P(1+R/100)^n$ doesn't just work for "years". It works for any compounding cycle. Here, the cycle is 1 hour.
1
The time $n$ is 2 hours. The rate $R$ is 2.5.
2
The multiplier is $(1 + 0.025) = 1.025$.
3
Calculate $506000 \times (1.025)^2$.
!
Be very careful with decimals! $2.5\%$ is $0.025$, NOT $0.25$. If you use $1.25$ you are calculating a 25% growth rate!
Step-by-Step Calculation
Given: $P = 506000$, Rate = $2.5\%$ per cycle, Time ($n$) = 2 cycles.
$A = P \left( 1 + \frac{R}{100} \right)^n$
$A = 506000 \left( 1 + \frac{2.5}{100} \right)^2$
$A = 506000 \times (1.025)^2$
$A = 506000 \times 1.050625$
$A = 531,616.25$
Since bacteria must be whole organisms, we round it down.

Ans: There will be approx 531,616 bacteria.[cite: 27]
Concept MCQ 1
In Question 7, we determined that compound interest represents "exponential growth". What is the defining mathematical characteristic of exponential growth compared to linear growth?[cite: 27]
A. It always uses a larger percentage rate.
B. The amount of growth accelerates over time because the multiplier is constantly acting on a larger and larger base. Linear growth adds the same flat amount every time.
C. Exponential growth only applies to populations and biology, while linear growth applies to money.
D. It takes longer to double your money.
1
Think about the animated graph. Linear is a straight line. Exponential curves upwards.
1
Why does the exponential line curve upward? What is happening to the size of the "interest chunks" every year?
!
Option C is false. Money absolutely uses exponential growth (compound interest). Option D is false because exponential growth doubles your money faster.
Logical Explanation
Linear Growth (Simple Interest) calculates growth on the original starting base only. It adds a flat, unchanging amount every cycle.
Exponential Growth (Compound Interest) updates the base every cycle. As the base gets larger, the percentage cut gets larger, meaning the growth accelerates over time, curving the graph upward.

Ans: Option (B)
Concept MCQ 2
Based on the "Rule of 72" (a famous math shortcut), you can quickly estimate how long it takes an investment to double under compound interest by dividing 72 by the interest rate. Does this shortcut perfectly match our exact calculation for Question 7?
A. Yes! 72 divided by 10 is 7.2 years, which perfectly matches our exact calculation of ~7.3 years.
B. No, 72 divided by 10 is 720 years.
C. Yes, because 10 times 72 is 720.
D. No, the Rule of 72 only works for Simple Interest.
1
The "Rule of 72" is a highly useful real-world mental math trick for Compound Interest.
The Shortcut Check
In Question 7, we found that $(1.10)^t = 2$ happens at roughly $t = 7.3$ years.
Let's test the Rule of 72 shortcut:
$\text{Years to Double} \approx \frac{72}{\text{Interest Rate}}$.
$\text{Years to Double} \approx \frac{72}{10} = 7.2$ years.
It is incredibly close and a fantastic way to check your work!

Ans: Option (A)
